Passenger Ticket & Holder - Issued to Mr & Mrs G Tirchett, Orient Line, 10 May 1954 Document Reg. No: HT 39

Passenger Ticket and Holder issued by the Orient Line to Geoffrey and Hazel Tirchett on 10 May 1954. The ticket is for third class passage from London to Melbourne on the Otranto leaving on 3 June 1954. Geoffrey and Hazel Tirchett migrated to Australia as `10 Pound Tourists'. Geoffrey already had three brothers in Australia, and upon arrival the couple lived with one of Geoffrey's brothers in Brunswick, until they bought their own home in Pascoe Vale. They fondly remember the journey, especially the food which seemed plentiful after rationing in England.

The term '10 Pound Pom' or '10 Pound Tourist' refers to British migrants who came to Australia following World War Two on an assisted passage scheme where each migrant paid 10 pounds a ticket. Migrants were required to remain in Australia for two years.
