Booklet - Embarkation Notice, Orient Line, 1954 Document Reg. No: HT 41

Summary:
Embarkation Notice issued by the Orient Line in 1954. The booklet provides information about the RMS Otranto's voyage on 3 June 1954. It was used by Geoffrey and Hazel Tirchett when they migrated to Australia on the Otranto as `10 Pound Tourists'. Geoffrey already had three brothers in Australia, and upon arrival the couple lived with one of Geoffrey's brothers in Brunswick, until they bought their own home in Pascoe Vale. They fondly remember the journey, especially the food which seemed plentiful after rationing in England.

The term '10 Pound Pom' or '10 Pound Tourist' refers to British migrants who came to Australia following World War Two on an assisted passage scheme where each migrant paid 10 pounds a ticket. Migrants were required to remain in Australia for two years.
