Matchbox - Safety Match Box, Bryant & May, circa 1911 Object Reg. No: SH 930747

Bryant and May Patent Safety Match Box collected by Australian Antarctic Division Director, Dr Phillip Law from Mawson's Huts, which were constructed during the Australasian Antarctic Expedition 1911-1914.

This is part of Museum Victoria's collection of artefacts from the 'Heroic Era' exploration of Antarctica.
Box made of thin plywood covered in cream paper brand wrapping. The front lists instructions. The sides are coated with striking material and badly scored. The paper backing is missing/torn from the back of the box. Inscribed on the wood in black handwriting 'From Mawson's Hut'. The box contains one wooden match with dark reddish brown tip, and a fragment of wood from the front of the box. The drawer is made of thin plywood with the edges coated by green paper.
