Book - 'Centennial International Exhibition Melbourne 1888-9 Official Record', Sands & McDougall, 1890 Object Reg. No: SH 960355

Official Record for the Centennial International Exhibition held at the (Royal) Exhibition Building in Melbourne from 1 August 1888 to 31 January 1889. The book describes exhibition events, national courts with a listing of exhibits, and prize winners.

The Centennial International Exhibition celebrated 100 years of British settlement and surpassed the grand scale of the1880 Melbourne International Exhibition, attracting over two million visitors (Approximately 69% of the colony's population at the time).

This copy of the Official Record comes from the Mechanics Institute Library. In circa 1970 the Library took a number of books to the Yarragon Dairy Company to burn them in the boilers. Mr McCrorey, who worked at the dairy company, noticed the book and rescued it, thinking it might be 'valuable'. People offered to purchase the book from Mr McCrorey but he always believed its rightful place was in the Exhibition archives, so he donated it to the Trustees of the Royal Exhibition Building in 1992.
