- Registered Letter from Kiddle, Briggs & Willox, Solicitors to Nicolae Condurateanu, dated 23 Jun 1952. The letter relates to the balance of purchase money for property bought being paid by installments to E T Hageman. It appears that Hagemean paid the balance owing to the vendors of the Condurateanu's house, and that the Contorateaus were to repay him at six pound per week. At that rate it would have taken a little over a year to pay him out. Although they bought the house in 1952 Hagemans name as ?unpaid vendor? still exists on the insurance documents in 1955.
Nicolae Condurateanu was a Romanian who was placed in a POW camp during WWII in Germany. He met his wife Barbara, also a Romanian, when she caught the wrong train and ended up in a German Displaced Persons camp, where Nicolae was Barbara had spent WWII in a Russian POW camp and was meant to have been on a train back to Romania. The couple married in 1948 at the A1 Heetre Camp and immigrated to Australia in 1950, where Nicolae worked in a Tea factory and Barbara at the Four and Twenty Pie factory. They had no family in Australia and had to rely on each other for support eventually purchasing a house and establishing a life in their new country. - Description:
