Painting - 'Gretchen', Oil, Framed, by Alice Chapman, circa 1888 Image Reg. No: SH 961804

This painting by Alice Chapman (1860-1929) was exhibited in the 1888-89 Centennial Exhibition in Melbourne. Two other paintings by the same artist were also exhibited then - `Fruit' and `Sitting in State'. The three paintings have been donated by the artist's grand-niece.
Description Of Content:
Framed oil painting by Victorian artist Alice Chapman, which was exhibited at the Melbourne Centennial Exhibition in 1888. This work, together with two other oil paintings, was awarded a Certificate of Merit at the Exhibition. The painting shows a young girl, seated with a book and writing pad on her lap. She wears a pale blue dress and has long brown hair. She is seated on a high backed chair in a room with floral carpet. Elaborate, wide frame, bronze in colour, with a leaf pattern around the outer edge.
