Newspaper Cutting - 'Exhibition Jottings', The Australasian Sketcher, Melbourne, 9 Aug 1888 Document Reg. No: SH 960382

Summary:
Black and white wood block engraving from The Australasian Sketcher, 9 August, 1888 p. 121, published by Wilson & McKinnon, Melbourne. Five different scenes show the installation of various aspects of the Melbourne Centennial Exhibition, 1888.

The 1888 Melbourne Centennial Exhibition opened at the Exhibition Buildings on the 1 August 1888 and closed at the end of January 1889. Unlike the 1880 International Exhibition, which had had a slow start but built throughout the course of the exhibition to be a highly successful and acclaimed event, the attendances at the Centennial Exhibition were somewhat flat, the Exhibition's opening being seen as the high-point. In part, this hinted at the slowing economic situation that would tip into the Depression of the early 1890s.
