Summary:
Hand coloured wood block engraving title page of the British illustrated newspaper, The Graphic, Saturday September 14, 1888, No. 981 Vol. XXXVIII. The illustration shows the opening ceremony of the Melbourne Centennial International Exhibition held on August 1 1888 in the Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne. The official party including the Governor, Sir Henry Loch, are shown on the stage erected beneath the Great Hall dome. A large crowd is seated in each of the transcepts looking towards the stage, which is decorated with potted plants and flags.

The Graphic was first published on 4 December 1869 by Illustrated Newspapers, Ltd, and continued to be published weekly under this title until 23 April 1932. It changed names to The National Graphic between 28 April and 14 July 1932 before ceasing publication.

The illustration is tinted in green, pink and pale yellow. The ornate interior of the Great Hall is clearly depicted. In the top LHC is a portrait of Sir James McBain, President of the Centennial International Exhibition. In the top RHC is a portrait of Frederick Sargood, executive Vice-President of the Centennial International Exhibition. Both portraits are lightly tinted.
