Two almost identical sepia stereographic views mounted on thick card. The images depict uniformed cadets marching in formation across the Exhibition Oval in front of the Melbourne Exhibition Building. The celebrations were in honour of the visit to Australia of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall & York for the opening of the first Federal Parliament on 9 May 1901.
Description:
Two almost identical sepia photographs mounted on thick brown card. The photographs show ranks of cadets marching across the Exhibition oval. They are accompanied by men in similar uniform, marching with swords drawn. The North facade of the REB is visible in the background with flags flying. The cadets are marching under rows of flags strung across the oval. A large crowd is visible in the background. This event was held as part of a Children's Fete held on the REB oval on May 11, 1901. It was part of a program of events held between May 6 - 16, 1901 in honour of the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall & York and their visit to Melbourne for the opening of the first Federal Parliament on May 9, 1901.
