Summary:
Pedal-operated dental drill used for dental treatment of patients at Lakeside Mental Hospital Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, circa 1910. Manufactured by White, S.S., Dental Manufacturing Co.
Description:
fitted with scaler. It fits inside a slit-sided tube held tightly by a small, double-ended belt which in its turn fits into another shaft with slit-sided end and is decoratively texture and waisted. This whole section rotates to turn drill. It fits inside a still wider shaft, at the end of which are 3 cog-wheels. Inner shaft emerges just above biggest cog, but doesn't connect. Bottom of outer shaft forms hollow square with short ornately-shaped column on one side and vertically rotating lever shaped like a tiny spanner on the other.
