Medallion - 'Vigilance' Jewel, Rebekah Lodge, Australia, post 1880 Object Reg. No: SH 960062

This medallion, known as the Vigilance Jewel, was worn by the officer known as Outside Guardian in the Rebekah Lodge. The Rebekah Lodge is the female auxiliary of the Independent Order of Oddfellows.

The Rebekah Lodges were founded in the early 1850s. Initially, the Rebekah Degree was granted at Odd Fellow Lodges, but by the 1880s the Rebekahs and Oddfellows conducted separate lodge activities. The name comes from the Biblical character of Rebekah. Rebekahs observe the Odd Fellows' creed of 'Friendship, Love and Truth', and are engaged in many social and charitable activities worldwide.
A circular jewel made of white metal shaped as a ring around a shield with a nib pen across that. Both the ring and shield & pen have engraved embellishment and the word VIGILANCE appears at the lower section of the ring. At the top of the ring is a small applied ring with one pale pink and one green ribbon threaded through and knotted. At one end of the pink ribbon a small gold coloured safety pin is attached. Note that the pen is at an oblique angle.
