Summary:
Pencil Drawing by Thomas Le. It depicts the journey of of Mai's family to Australia and shows their first few months here. It is one of a series of illustrations commissioned by the Immigration Museum used to tell the story of Mai Ho a Vietnamese 'boat person' who arrived in Australia in the 1970s. Copies of the illustrations were displayed but Thomas decided to donate the originals to the collection. Thomas is also a Vietnamese migrant who arrived in Australian in 1978 after leaving Vietnam.
Description:
Pencil drawing in colour. The first frame depicts Mai and her two daughters Min and Tan on the aeroplane which brought them from Malaysia to Australia. Mai and Tan are eagerly looking out the window for their first glimpse of Australia. The second frame shows Min and Tan being welcomed to Midway Hostel in Maribyrnong by a nun who is giving them gifts. The use of bright colours suggests a sense of happiness and excitement. The final frame depicts Mai and her family in their first home in Australia, they are huddled around the heater wrapped in blankets as they had few possessions.
