Summary:
Pencil Drawing by Thomas Le. The artwork depicts Mai creating her new life in Australia, working at the GHM Holden Factory, at night school, talking with customers in-front of one of her businesses and assisting newly arrived Vietnamese migrants. It is one of a series of illustrations commissioned by the Immigration Museum used to tell the story of Mai Ho a Vietnamese 'boat person' who arrived in Australia in the 1970s. Copies of the illustrations were displayed but Thomas decided to donate the originals to the collection. Thomas is also a Vietnamese migrant who arrived in Australian in 1978 after leaving Vietnam.
Description:
Pencil drawing in colour. The first frame shows Mai in her job as the first female quality control inspector at the GHM Holden Fisherman's Bend Factory. The second frame depicts Mai studying at night school, she received qualifications in human resource management, computer operations and beauty therapy. The third frame shows Mai outside one of her businesses speaking with some customers. The final frame depicts Mai sitting with two recently arrived Vietnamese refugees at the Vietnamese Community Support Service she helped establish. These four frames illustrate the determination which Mai put into creating her life in Australia and the success and happiness she found in her new life.
