Medal - Mt Gambier Old Residents, 1919 Reg. No: NU 34823
- Bronze medal without ring and loop attached for wearing, featuring an image of Mt Gambier. Mt Gambier was identified by Lieut. Grant 1800, and explored by S.G. Henty in 1839.
Other Details: Medal issued in 1919 by the Mt Gambier Old Residents Association to commemorate the 'discovery' of Mount Gambier by Lieut. James Grant on 3 December 1800 and the exploration by Stephen George Henty in June 1839. Grant was a career British naval officer who commanded the Lady Nelson, a surveying ship he was supposed to deliver in 1800 to the more experienced surveyor Matthew Flinders, waiting in Sydney. Flinders had left Australia by the time Grant arrived, however, and it fell to Grant and his colleagues to undertake a preliminary survey of the Bass Coast, as well as the Hunter Valley region. Stephen George Henty was a member of the Henty family and brother to Victoria's first settler, Edward Henty. Stephen Henty had migrated to the Swan River Colony in 1829 and was an enterprising explorer, merchant, trader, shipowner, whaler and magistrate, and active in civic affairs. From 1856 to 1870 he was also a member of the Legislative Assembly.
