Medal - Launceston A.N.A. Exhibition 1908 Commemorative
Issued by: F & W Stewart
Other Details: A gilded bronze (31 mm diameter) commemorative of the Launceston A.N.A. Exhibition in 1908 produced for the Jewellers F. & W. Stewart for distribution to children attending. The medal is holed and probably had a ribbon attached so that the child could wear the medal. It features a view of Albert Hall where the exhibition was held. The Australian Natives' Association was formed in Melbourne in 1871. Composed of native-born Australians, it aimed to develop a direction for Australia that was independent of Britain, and to develop quality educational facilities for native Australians. It was a vocal supporter of Federation. The ANA spread to all Australian states and eventually New Zealand. Following Federation it adopted causes including national defence, the White Australia policy, railway expansion and nature conservation. F & W Stewart, Jewellers, was established at 147 Charles Street, Launceston, in 1879 by brothers Frederic and William Stewart. The Stewart brothers are considered Tasmania's first medallists. In 1902 the brothers purchased a property at 100 Charles Street, where the business remains to this day. - Description:
