Menu - Sammy Lee's World Famous All Male Revue, circa 1960-1975 Reg. No: HT 1351
- Menu for Sammy Lee's Show Room, advertising 'Sammy Lee's World Famous All Make Revue', made around 1965-1975. It was purchased by the donor at Camberwell Market.
The menu relates to an infamous St Kilda landmark of the 1950s-1980s: the Les Girls troop (which occupied several venues over the years). Run by the affable Sammy Lee, it was often Melbournians' first live exposure to cross dressing and the whole concept of homosexuality. The menu reflects the air of sophistication that Les Girl tried to evoke, and includes a range of cocktails, top shelf spirits and `imported' champagne.
Samuel (Sammy) Lee (about 1912-1975), was a night club and restaurant owner. Born in Canada, he adopted the name 'Sammy Lee', and moved to Australia after touring in 1937 as a drummer. He opened a nightclub in Sydney's Potts Point in 1939, sold out in 1946, then in 1937 formed a partnership to open Sammy Lee's Theatre Restaurant in Oxford Street. By 1950 he also operated other clubs, and 1963 he formed another partnership to open his best-known night club, Les Girls Restaurant at Kings Cross.
