Other Details: This is a bronze strike of the medal issued to award to finalists in the Emperor of Germany's Prize. Gold medals were awarded to the finalists with their name engraved withing the wreath on the reverse. This bronze piece was specially struck for the Melbourne Mint reference collection. The Melbourne International Exhibition ran from 1 October 1880 to 30 April 1881. The exhibition building that still stands was constructed for the occasion, designed by Joseph Reed and built by David Mitchell. Over 1.3 million people visited the exhibition at a time when Melbourne's population was only around 282,000.

A bronze medal from the dies used to strike gold prizes issued to finalists in the Emperor of Germany's Prize. It features a view of the complete 1880 Exhibition Buildings as seen from above from the north west corner.
