Other Details: This medal seems to be a sample provided to Sir. Redmond Barry by Stokes & Martin in an attempt to win a contract to provide prize medals for the Victorian Exhibition. It is struck in white metal and employs the obverse die made to commemorates the opening of the exhibition on 6 Nov. 1872. The Exhibition was held 6 November 1872 - 8 January 1873.
Description:
A white metal prize medal (48 mm. diameter). Around the edge on a broad rim is the legend MEDAL STRUCK TO COMMEMORATE THE OPENING OF THE VICTORIAN EXHIBITION. At the centre within a wreath is STOKES AND MARTIN MEDALISTS MELBOURNE 1872. On the reverse, within a wreath formed by wheat sheaves, AWARDED TO with space for a winners name and details to be engraved.
