- Polish regional costume from the Krakow region for a young girl. Made by Spoldzielnia Pracy Rekodziela Artystycnego, circa 1988-1989. It consists of a a full skirt, with a petticoat, a long-sleeved blouse, an apron, a bolero or vest, a headpiece and a necklace.
The costume was forwarded to the donor in Melbourne by her late mother, brother and sister from Poland. Mrs Grohs had requested a traditional girl's costume in anticipation of the birth of her grandchild. However, a grandson was born, so the costume was never worn. She had intended her grand-daughter would learn about her Polish heritage.
Costumes of this type are made in Government run and funded folk art or 'culture workshops' in Poland. This particular example is representative of the Krakow region in Poland.
- Polish Regional Costume for a young girl consisting of seven items of clothing: Full skirt of wool mix, with a traditional Krakow floral pattern; Nylon white petticoat with narrow shoulder straps v shaped neckline and square back; Triple stranded necklace of pink, silver and gold beads, threaded onto acrylic line and secured with a silver metal clasp; White polycotton blouse with long wrist length sleeves with small cuff bands with no fastenings, the centre front panel is decorated with floral hand embroidery; Sleeveless and collarless bolero of black velvet, densely decorated with sequins and beads, in colours of gold, green, red, silver orange, crimson, blue, and white; Apron of white cotton, with narrow waist band, narrow tie straps and scalloped hem. The front panel is decorated with open work and embroidered motifs in white thread; and a Floral crown of stiffened fabric, wire and thread.
