Summary:: Unfolded accommodation plan for the one-class tourist ships M.V. Akaroa, M.V. Arawa and M.V. Aranda operated by Shaw Savill Line. These ships sailed between Britain and Australia via New Zealand from 1969-1971. The ships were all fully air conditioned and fitted with stabilisers. The black and white illustrated plans show the Observation Deck, Lido Deck, and decks A, B, C, D and E housing passenger accommodation for each ship.

i sailed to new zealand in 1968 on her and still have a little flag penant with her name on. i was aged 2 when arriving from england to new zealand with my twin sister. the crew were fantastic in every respect

I have just found out that my Father at the
age of 14 sailed on the Arawa to New Zealand.
He came back to live in Liverpool years later

I have sailed on 2 Arawa's. The 1st voyage from u.k. when I was 4 and then on the 2nd Arawa to u.k. end of 1969. what a fantastic 5 weeks that was!!!!

I sailed on the Aranda as a QM, joined the ship on 7th Nov 1969 jumped ship in Sydney 7th Jan 1970, that same trip my mate Peter Smithson fell down the hatch in Auckland, I often wonder what happened to him. I lived in Sydney for 6 months then moved to Toronto Canada on June 6th. 1970. Now retired in Hope BC Canada. My cabin mate was Con (Conrad)

M.V. AKAROA .....my first trip to sea as a comnmie waiter the day before my 16th birthday leaving KG5 docks in london on 7th jan 1971. Last passenger trip. I did the final trip later that year with a skeleton crew carrying just cargo to Timaru and bluff (I think) great times

I sailed on the Akaroa 6th January 1969, to Australia and NZ - we had to unload cargo ( mainly bundles of wool ) on deck as it was in danger of spontaneous combustion. My first world trip - whatever happened to my mate Glen from Charlton, Jock and the guy from Leeds? They were good days. Who remembers Polly and Lena?

Hi Brian I sailed on the Akaroa the trip she caught fire. I was in charge of lifeboat 3. Apart from the fire it was a good trip. Joe

In reply to Brian Rees i was aboard her when the bales of wool went on fire a bit of a tense time.I remember grabbing a couple of packet,s of fag,s my money to this day i don,t know what good they were going to do me.I joined her in K.G.V straight from the training school at Gravesend.Great day,s.

Sailed on the Akaroa 30th July 1968 from Wellington to Southampton. Always remember that it kept breaking down was adrift in Pacific/Atlantic on a number of occasions!

What a blast from the past - Brian has ignited lots of memories (excuse the pun) - I was an electrical engineer on that trip - fire occured two days out from Barbados.

Sailed on Akaroa Voyages 4/5/6/7 most trips somthing happened, (4)fire bug/stowaways from Tihiti/ crew member lost overboard between Freemantle and Melbourne (5)Akaroa fell over in drydock KG5 March 1970 then the fire a couple of weeks later 1000miles from Barbados 2.00am / (6) Jimmy (Boatman) Murdered by Doris (Bedroom Steward)between Tahiti and Sydney..... RIP Jimmy

My husband Joe and myself along with our son John sailed to Sydney on the Arawa, landing on the 6th April 1969, Met with Janet and Clive (newly weds), they disembarked at Perth love to here from them again.

i with my wife returned to australia in 1969 on the mv akaroa .we had our daughter [12mths] with us .my wife was an assisted migrant.the 5 weeks it took was a delight after 5yrs. of english winters.still remember every moment as if it were yesterday.would love to hear from anybody who was on the ship on the voyage [around may june 1969] i originally sailed to u.k. in 1964 on the northern star ,another excellent voyage.

I was a waiter and cabin steward on Akaroa 1969-1970 was on boad when she caught fire crossing the Atlantic passengers where fantastic took us almost 8 hours to put the fire out.

My new husband and I were on the maiden voyage of the newly named MV Akaroa. We sailed from a dock in London via Barbados, Curacao,Panama Canal, Fiji Auckland. I remember we arrived at Auckland in June 1968. I especially remember the dya befre we arrived in Auckland we went through typhoon a very strong and rough storm and the sounds of the stableisers.

I was five, I remember the fire 1970, and running up a hallway with my mother. I remember a problem with lifeboats not being able to be lowered. Can anybody clarify this? I still have a news paper cutting from the UK too if anybody wants a scanned copy...
