Naval Ship Model - Heavy Cruiser, HMS Dorsetshire
Reg. No: ST 033450
- Summary:
- Model of the Royal Navy Norfolk class heavy cruiser HMS Dorsetshire. Commissioned in 1931, the Dorsetshire joined the Atlantic Fleet and later served with the Africa and China Stations. During the Second World War, Dorsetshire took part in the action against the German battleship Bismarck, later picking up Bismarck's few survivors. Dorsetshire later sank the Python, a German supply ship carrying survivors of the German auxiliary cruiser Atlantis sunk by HMS Devonshire in November 1941. Along with HMS Cornwall, Dorsetshire was lost while serving with the Eastern fleet on 5 April 1942 after being attacked by Japanese carrier-based aircraft off Ceylon. This model was acquired by the Museum from the model-maker Mr E.J. Krummeck in 1941 as part of a large collection of British and Australian naval ship models.
