Indian Model - Taj Mahal, Alabaster, circa 1880 Reg. No: ST 039779

Summary:: This alabaster model of the Taj Mahal was made in Krishnanagar, Lucknow, Calcutta or Pune in India in the latter half of the nineteenth century. It was exhibited as part of a group of figures representing various castes, occupations and religious sects. This model was gifted to the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) by the India Commission of the Melbourne International Exhibition at the close of the Exhibition in 1881.
Description:: Model of the Taj Mahal on a square base made from a slab of Alabaster painted brown and white. The model is sculpted and pierced alabaster, with decorative features painted in green and red. The spires on the Minarets are copper alloy pins.
