Full length portrait of Corporal G. P. Mulcahy in dress uniform of Australian Engineers militia (part of the Commonwealth Military Forces). Taken by Eden Studios, Melbourne, before he enlisted to serve in World War I.

Gilbert Payne Mulcahy was born in 1893 in Clunes, Victoria and was the eighth child of John and Margaret Mulcahy. He enlisted on 15 February 1915 and was given regimental number HQ1. He was first appointed as a corporal before being promoted to sergeant in March 1915 then progressing further through the ranks. Mulcahy embarked from Melbourne to on the HMAT Ulysses on 10 May 1915. He served with the 6th Battalion in Gallipoli from September to December 1915 before being evacuated to Egypt. He then travelled to the Western Front where the 6th Battalion remained until 1918. He returned to Australia on 9 March 1919.

The Mulcahy collection includes five diaries and 47 photographs.
