A clarification; the red and white combination, while used by BMC Competition department, was never offered on new minis by BMC.

Re: Tristan's comment. I have been told the same thing before, but I have seen Mini Coopers in these colors. (I actually own a '62 Cooper with two tone paint which is factory.) It would be very easy to clarify as the color combos are actually stated on the build plate of the car. Regards, Luke

I had one of these & was told that the cooper engine was 997, not 998 like the mini delux

With this car being an Australian-built Morris Cooper, Tartan Red & Nurburg White was indeed available from the factory from early 1964 production. Not so in the UK built Mini Coopers until much later. Both 997cc & 998 cc Morris Coopers were produced here in Oz. The 997 is rare, the 998 versions even rarer. This particular car is a 998 version going by the detail mentioned.

I recently bought a numbers matching Morris Cooper, Australian production. The plate lists the colours as Tartan red/Nurburg white. I was told the original lady owner bought it in early 1964 and that the car was built in 1963. She owned it until 2002. I've been told it's a 998 while others say it's a 997. The engine prefix is 9FSAL.... I've seen English publications that state this means it's a 997 however some Australian documents state this engine prefix was used for both 997 and 998.
The point of this is that the red/white colour combination of the Museum car, assuming it's original, is correct.

This colour combination was offered by the factory. The colours on our car are Jet red body and Artic White roof. I have my dad's 1971 MkII Morris Cooper S which was bought off the showroom floor from Dent's in Keilor Rd, Nth Essendon. Our car, interestingly, has coverless 850 ashtrays, such was the quality control back then.
