Aeroplane Model - Hawker Sea Fury FB.11 Object Reg. No: ST 023878

Summary:
Aircraft History

Hawker Aircraft Ltd in Britain designed and built a series of very high performance combat aircraft during World War II. These included the Typhoon, Tempest and Fury. By 1945, a naval version of the Hawker Fury known as the Sea Fury X was in development featuring power folding wings, an arrestor hook and a Bristol Centaurus sleeve valve radial engine. The FB.11 was a fighter-bomber development of the Sea Fury X and was selected to equip the newly formed Royal Australian Navy Fleet Air Arm in the late 1940s. RAN Sea Furies were flown in combat by 805 and 808 Squadrons between October 1951 and January 1952, operating from the aircraft carrier HMAS Sydney III off the Korean coast during the Korean War. The Sea Fury continued to serve with the RAN until the late 1950s when the type was withdrawn and replaced by the jet-powered De Havilland Sea Venom all-weather fighter.

Model History

This 1:32 scale model was commissioned by the Museum and built by Mr R.D. Ramsay. It was received in 1954 and appears to be part of a group of models relating to the Korean War commissioned by the Museum at this time. It is painted as WG628 which was delivered to Australia in 1952 and later served with 723 Squadron RAN. On 22 November 1955, this aircraft had a total engine failure while flying over the Australian Alps and made a forced landing at Canberra while being flown by LT T. Branson. The aircraft was sold for scrap in 1959.
