The Phantom II was developed at the Rolls Royce works in Nightingale Road, Derby, UK in 1927-29 and bore little resemblance to the Phantom I. The 1929 Phantom II had a new chassis design and a 7,668 c.c six-cylinder engine with a revised lubrication system. In common with many luxury vehicles at this time the bodywork was hand-made to a customer's individual order by a coachbuilding firm. In Melbourne, the firm of Martin & King built bodies for Rolls-Royce cars as well as other prestige vehicles. Wealthy individuals such as C.N. McKay in Toorak, Melbourne owned a Phantom II. The Phantom II also attracted celebrity owners such as Charlie Chaplin, Sir Malcolm Campbell, Noel Coward and the Prince of Wales. A total of 1,767 Phantom II's were built between 1929 and 1935 when it was succeeded by the Phantom III.
Model History
This 1:8 scale model of a Rolls-Royce Phantom II was made by the Pocher firm in Italy. It was purchased by the Museum in 1972. It represents a 1932 'Sedanca Coupe' with a folding roof. Pocher models were supplied as unassembled kits with a mixture of plastic, steel and brass components.
