Motor Car Chassis Model - Hohm Modelle, circa 1950
Reg. No: ST 028483
- Summary:
- This scale working model of a motor car chassis and engine was made in Hamburg, West Germany by Hohm Modelle. Emil Hohm was an Opel car dealer who began building instructional models in the 1930s as a teaching aid to show drivers how a car worked. The engine and drive-train are powered by an electric motor. These models were used in German driving schools where student drivers were required to have an appreciation of basic mechanical principles. Production resumed after the Second World War and more than 1,000 examples of these Hohm working instructional models were built. Although this model was apparently built in about 1950, it is based on a 1930s vehicle design and was donated to the Museum in 1958.

Here is some more information on this and other Hohm models. The oldest known chassis model Hohm made dates from 1948 -1949 and it’s in my collection. http://www.toyco.nl/picture_library/first-hohm.jpg They came as a 4 or 6 cylinder model. Unfortunately the one in the museum collection isn’t complete, the front grille is missing. I can’t see if there is anything else missing because of the bad picture quality. Hohm not only made chassis models but engines transmissions differentials steering models etc as well.
