- Summary:
- Model of the steamship SS Orient with auxiliary barque rig and four masts. The Orient was built by John Elder & Co., Glasgow in 1879 (5,386 tons). Operated by the Orient Steam Navigation Co. (Orient Line) on the UK-Australia route. In November 1879 Orient's maiden voyage was between London and Melbourne via the Suez Canal. During the Boer War, Orient was used as a troopship and her last voyage took place in 1909. This model was commissioned by the owner and exhibited at the 1880-81 Melbourne International Exhibition and was subsequently donated to the Museum by the Orient Line.
