Steam Ship Model - RMS Osterley, Reg, No: ST 026372

I was wondering if you could send me a picture of this ship as I can't find a picture on your website. I researching my family tree, I have found that my Great-Grandfather not only helped to build this ship, but also sailed on it. He was a shipwright in Glasgow and was then offered a position in Burma, where he relocated for a while with his family. The journey back to Glasgow was via Brisbane, which is how I found him on a passenger list.

As I now live in Prth, WA, I am unable to visit your museum so I thought I would ask if there was any way you could send me a picture of this ship along with as much information as you have on it.

Thank you very much for your help,

Yours sincerely,

Steve Bannister

Hi Steve, unfortunately the museum doesn't have any images of the Osterley in it's collection. We suggest that you try the Picture Australia website at http://pictureaustralia.org. Several institutions have images of the ship there and you can order them directly through the website. It's a good idea to do searches under 'RMS Osterley' 'SS Osterley' and simply 'Osterley' so that you come up with as many examples as possible. Good luck!

If anyone is still looking for a photo I have a copy of an Orient Lines book for passengers from my aunt who sailed to Freemantle from England in 1924 - it contains a couple of pictures of the boat including one in wartime camouflage.

My grandparents came on the Osterley. L.Short can you send me a picture. My grandparents (coalminer family) came from Durham, and my son Joshua played the adult Billy Elliot in the stage show in Sydney, Melbourne and New York.

My grandfather went to the first world war in Europe on the Osterley. He left Melbourne on 14.2.1917 and arrived in Plymoth on 11.4.1917. He served on the battlefield in France, was wounded in action and sent back to England to mend and recover.

Alan H, my great uncle was on the same sailing as your grandfather. He embarked in Sydney on 10.2.17. He died in Belgium in October 1914.
