Summary:
Aircraft History

First flown in January 1916, the French-built Nieuport 17 was a development of the earlier Nieuport 11 fighter. Mostly serving with the French during the First World War, it also saw service with the Royal Flying Corps where it was flown by aces including W.A. 'Billy Bishop. French ace Charles Nungesser also flew the type. The type was lightly armed with a single machine gun mounted on the upper wing. A Le Rhone 110 horsepower engine was usually fitted.
