I have an identical watch owned by my grandfather (I am 59) - how do you know what year it is, as I see there are many years between different watches of the same make.

Hello Jacqueline - This watch has been dated using the hallmark for 1884-1885 (uncrowned leopard, capital i). There are several websites and publications available which list hallmarks by description and date, and this should allow you to date your watch. If you have trouble finding or identifying the hallmark, a local antique specialist or jeweller should be able to assist you. Best of luck!
