I have a J Gilbert pocket watch. It reads tempus Fugit inside watch case. And it is a key wind,silver case? Would like info.

J. Gilbert most likely Joseph Gilbert Based in Geneva which would date the watch at about 1860 or later, He Is also possible relation to Richard though facts are Scetchy On that One.

The date on this watch is very interesting. The Richard Gilbert (my great great grandfather) who we thought was the founder of R Gilbert & Sons was born about 1848. So either there was another generation or two before him watch making, or the movement is in an older case, or possible the date on the hallmarks is mistaken. Anyone that can shed further light, I would be very interested.

I have a top wind pocket watch by R Gilbert & Sons,Coventry and Barrow,makers to the admiralty.Is this a later model or would it be dated about 1920? The movement is in an elgin usa case.

we have recently seen a pocket watch the face is marked " makers to the admiralty R Gilbert & son ltd , Coventry and Barrow. the case is a Denisson(handsworth birmingham)and hallmarked for 1915. Interestingly the movement is by Williamson (coventry) and it might indicate that Gilberts were operating more in their capacity as jewellers at that time and either buying watches in or assembling them from ready made units
