Other Details: The coronation of Edward VII in 1902 prompted major celebrations in Australia. It was an opportunity for the new nation to reaffirm its pride at being a key member of the British Empire. Over 40 different medals were produced around Australia, including this medal issued by the Shire of Morwell. The medal names Samuel Varv as Shire President. Varv was a Justice of the Peace and politician in the Shire of Morwell. He served as Shire President at least twice, including a term that ended in August 1902. Varv lived in Morwell. At that time Morwell had a population of 2,897 and 569 houses, in an area of 255 square miles.
