It depicts the baptism of Volodymyr the Great on the bank of the river Dnieper in 988 AD, and near full-length figures of Volodymyr the Great and his mother the Grand Princess Olha standing facing, both crowned and with halo, each holding a long cross in right hand. Volodymyr was a pagan Ukrainian prince who convered to Christianity. His conversion was politically useful, enabling him to create an alliance with Byzantine emperor Basil II.
The medal is stored in a blue case and has a brief descriptive card. - Description:
