Token - 1 Penny, Metcalfe & Lloyd, Grocers, Wine & Spirit Merchants, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, 1863
Reg. No: NU 11422
- Summary:
- Copper One Penny Token, minted by an unknown British mint. Issued by Metcalfe & Lloyd, Grocers, Wine & Spirit Merchants, Sydney, 1863. This business is the third in a string of token issuing businesses involving either H.G. Hanks, A. Lloyd, or their descendants. William F. Lloyd (thought to be the son or nephew of A. Lloyd) and Thomas Metcalfe opened a business in 1863, known as Metcalfe and Lloyd. They traded from Hanks & Lloyd's original premises, 478 George Street. When Lloyd retired in 1866 the new partner's name was included in the title of the renamed business, Metcalfe and Foss. Metcalfe and Foss ceased trading in 1868.
- Description:
- A round bronze token (34 mm diameter). The token design featues the name, address, business of the issuer and date of issue: Metcalf & Lloyd, 478 George Street Sydney, shipping and family grocers, wine and spirit merchants and purveyors of concentrated family coffee, 1863. Much of the legend around the rim of the obverse has been re-entered; a partly re-fillef Y can be seen after FAMILY and the S of GROCERS is clearly over a letter R. This token has been cleaned - the obverse has re-toned green.
- Acquisition Information:
- Transfer from Melbourne Branch of Royal Mint, 1978
