Other Details: Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee in 1897 was celebrated the great enthusiasm throughout the British Empire. It prompted many Australian local governments to issue commemorative medals. The Shire of Doncaster, which issued this medal, was located east-north-east of Melbourne. It had only been declared seven years before it issued this medal, although settlements had begun to develop along the Koonung Koonung Creek and other streams in the Doncaster area from the 1850s. Fruit growing developed as the basis for Doncaster's economy. It was not until the 1960s and 70s that it developed as a residential area.
