Portrait medal of Gaspard de Coligny (Coligni) (1519-1572) by Ramond Gayrard. One of the Galerie Metallique des Grand Hommes Francais series. Minted in Paris, 1821.
Statement Of Significance:
The Lord of Châtillon, Gaspard was a French nobleman and admiral. He is remembered as a disciplined Huguenot leader in the French Wars of Religion (1562-1598). The date of his birth on this medal, 1516, differs from that now accepted, 1519.

Galerie Metallique Des Grands Hommes Francais: a large series of portrait medals produced in France beginning in 1819, by leading medalists of the day. At least 119 people were honoured.
