Summary:
Framed black & white photograph of the ship, S. Y. Aurora, 1911-1914. This photograph was given to Robert Bage by Captain John King Davis, circa 1914. Davis was Captain of the Aurora and Second-in-Charge of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914.

Lieutenant Bage was also a member of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914, serving as Astronomer and Assistant Magnetician & Recorder of Tides. He led the Southern Sledging Party in an attempt to reach the south magnetic pole and was one of the six men who volunteered to remain at Cape Denison for a second year to help find the missing Far Eastern Party. Throughout the second year he continued the magnetic observations and looked after stores.

On return to Australia he was made second in command of the Third Field Company of Engineers and was promoted to captain before taking part in the landing at Gallipoli, where he was killed on 7 May 1915.

Black & white photograph mounted behind glass in a green and black wooden frame. Wire with two eyelets in back of frame for hanging. Note paper with printed and typewritten text and handwritten labels attached with adhesive to the rear of the frame.

A three masted sailing ship with a smoke stack berthed at an ice plain. Person and penguin standing on ice alongside ship. A person is also near the top of one of the masts and another is climbing from/to the ship via a rope ladder.
