Summary:
Australia Victoria Melbourne
Commonwealth of Australia Medal 1901 (AD)
Mint: Fairfax & Roberts

The Federation of the Australian colonies in 1901 was an occasion for celebration and national pride. Numerous medals were produced, often to be worn at special Federation events. This medal was minted by Sydney-based silversmiths and jewellers Fairfax & Roberts. The Fairfax & Roberts partnership was established in 1876 and claims to be Australia's earliest emporium for fine silver, optical instruments and jewellery. Its workshops have served royalty, heads of state and wealthy citizens, and it has been favoured for the production of government presentation pieces and service ware. This medal was formerly in the collection of J.S. Gotch, co-founder of the distribution empire Gordon and Gotch.
