Other Details: Medal issued in 1901 to commemorate the establishment of the Commomwealth of Australia. It was commissioned by the Town of Brunswick, and names John Wood Fleming as Mayor. John Wood Fleming was local politician and a Justice of the Peace. He lived at 270 Park West, Brunswick. As a Councillor he represented South Ward. He sat on a Public Works committee in 1900, and was elected Mayor, retiring in August 1902. In 1902 Brunswick had a population of 24,182 and 5,024 houses on 2,722 acres. It included a wide range of factories including potteries, smelting and gas works.
