- Uhlans tracking course of balloon near stone bridge. Proabably depicts a scene from the Franco-Prussian War (based on information in slides in same group).
Uhlans were Polish light cavalry armed with lances, sabres and pistols. The title was later used by lancer regiments in the Russian, Prussian, and Austrian armies. During and after the Napoleonic Wars cavalry regiments armed with lances were formed in many states throughout Europe. Cavalry carrying this weapon were usually specifically designated as lancers or uhlans. - Description:
- Single lantern slide, comprising circular hand-coloured print on glass, with black mask, mounted in rectangular wooden frame.
- Description Of Content:
- Coloured drawing of soldiers on horseback, having just crossed a stone bridge over a river. A hot air balloon appear in the upper centre. Buildings with high-pitched roofs appear on the left. The soldiers wear blue and purple uniforms with hats.
