Lantern Slide - 'Lord French, Earl of Ypres, Autographing The Song of the Ypres League', 1920-1925 Image Reg. No: MM 033648

Lantern slide depicting Lord French, Earl of Ypres, autographing 'The Song of the Ypres League' - 'A Corner in Flanders'. The better known 'Tramping Along' - another image titled 'Song of the Ypres League' - was published in 1926, suggesting a date for this image. However, Lord French died in 1925, so the image must be earlier.

The Ypres League was a British World War I veterans and remembrance society, founded on 28 September 1920 to support veterans of the battles of the Ypres Salient. It produced a quarterly newsletter and a guide book to Ypres, and provided a variety of services to its members, including specially designed membership certificates. It erected a memorial church at Ypres, established international branches were established, and published a newsletter well into the 1930s. Some branches were still active in the 1940s.
Standard format (3¼ x 3¼ inch square) lantern slide, comprising black & white photographic image printed on glass with black paper rectangular mask against image under protective glass cover plate; sealed with black paper binding tape around edge.
Description Of Content:
Photograph of aged man signing a document. Two inkwells are placed in front of him; flowers appear to the left and right. Another document is angled into the right side of the image, inscribed 'A CORNER IN FLANDERS'. The man is balding, and wears a moustache.
