Francesco Petrarca (1304-1374), known in English as Petrarch, was an Italian scholar, poet and humanist of the early Renaissance. He is often called the "Father of Humanism". Two hundred years after his death his work's began the inspiration of the modern Italian language, while his sonnets were admired and imitated throughout Europe during the Renaissance becomoing a model for lyrical poetry. Petrarch was also one of the writers to refer to the period of Early Middle Age Europe as the 'Dark Ages'.
This lantern slide is part of the Francis Collection of pre-cinematic apparatus and ephemera, acquired by the Australian and Victorian Governments in 1975. David Francis was the curator of the National Film and Sound Archive of the British Film Institute as well as being a co-founder of the Museum of the Moving Image in London, which was operational between 1988 and 1999.
