Other Details: Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee in 1897 was celebrated the great enthusiasm throughout the British Empire. It prompted many Australian local governments to issue commemorative medals. This gilt medal was issued by the City of Melbourne and names W. Strong as Mayor. William Strong was a local politician was served on the Melbourne City Council in the late 19th century. He represented Victoria Ward. Strong was elected Mayor in 1986 and served in that position for one year. Melbourne at that time had a population of 68,749 in an area of 6,000 acres.
