Other Details: Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee in 1897 was celebrated the great enthusiasm throughout the British Empire. It prompted many Australian local governments to issue commemorative medals, including this medal from the Shire of Cranbourne, naming D. Craig as Shire President and A.N. Facey as Shire Secretary. Facey was later Shire representative at the opening of the first Parliament at Federation in 1901. The Shire of Cranbourne was situated approximately forty six kilometres south-east of Melbourne, focused on the town of Cranbourne. It developed as a farming centre in the 1850s and 60s, focusing on dairying, market gardens and orchards. Cranbourne also developed as a market centre for settlers in the outlying Westernport area and as a link with Melbourne. The Shire of Cranbourne was proclaimed in 1868.
