Other Details: Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee in 1897 was celebrated the great enthusiasm throughout the British Empire. It prompted many Australian local governments to issue commemorative medals. This medal was issued by the Town of Brighton. It names Thomas Wilson as Mayor. Thomas Wilson represented Central Ward. Brighton at that time had a population of 9,373 in an area of 3,288 acres. Its local economy included manufactories, floriculture and horticulture, with tourism already a strong mainstay.
