Wood issued two types of penny tokens. The one, dated 1855 is classified as dies A/1 as dated pieces are listed before undated in Andrews. However the heavier weight of the second type argues that it is the earlier, dies B/2. Further, it offers the statement "payable on demand here Montpellier Retreat Inn" also suggesting an earlier issue. This halfpenny denomination, dies C/3, bears the same promise and was issued at the same time.

Hi we found a wdwood montpellier retreat inn token dated 1855. My children are cleaning the coin. Is it of interest to the Hobart Museum or just an interesting find. Very happy to hand to museum for their display if it is a piece of interest.

Thanks Deb

Museum Victoria Comment
Hi Deb, thanks for contacting us about this token. If you wish to donate it to the Tasmanian Museum in Hobart you may wish to contact them through their website http://www.tmag.tas.gov.au/ It is best not to clean the token as this can damage objects if it is not done correctly.
