Description Of Content:
Ship - S.S.Katoomba. Titleed 'the port anchor in use at Albany'. SS Katoomba was a single funnel passenger ship built by Harland & Wolff Ltd., at Belfast. The vessel was built for and operated by McIlwraith McEacharn between 1913 and 1946. Used as a troopship during both world wars.

As a nine year old, in oct 1948 i sailed from Barbados to Southampton on the Katoomba. A couple of days south of the Azores, we ran into a cyclone. It was horrendous.It lasted for almost two days. The wind and waves hit us on the port side. She rolled to starboard very steeply all the time. but never to port. In fact she rolled to over 40Deg once. One lady had her leg broken by a flying table in the lounge. The storm started to ease as we aproached the Azores,and from then it was an uneventfull trip. I will never forget that trip as long as i live.

i have two paintings of mv katoomba one will be donated to anmm sydney the other to newcastle maritime museum
