Other Details: This medal was awarded to Mary Strachan at the Bendigo Juvenile & Industrial Exhibition in 1896 for a Copy Book. The medal was originally gilded but most has now been lost revealing the silver core. Juvenile industrial exhibitions were held to to encourage young people to compete in 'works of industry and usefulness', to impress the dignity and honour of labour, to nurture those in the trades, to show handiwork, to share ideas, to develop the idea of 'useful employment' in leisure hours and to create a 'taste for the fine arts and ornamental works, so as to make the home attractive' (Official Record, Australian Juvenile Industrial Exhibition, Ballarat, 1890).
Description:
A silver gilt medal with a mount attached to the top edge with a single ring through the hole. It features a gold mine surrounded by a wreath with shield at base; rings, containing wheat sheaf (left side) and wine barrel (right side) break the wreath on each side. The medal also details the exhibition, date and winner's name and entry.
