Photograph - Flick Book, Thwaites & Harvie, Melbourne, Victoria, Nov 1897 Image Reg. No: MM 043532

Flick book of the Melbourne Cup races in 1897, produced by Melbourne photographer Robert William Harvie and his partner, fellow engineer, Ernest Thwaites.

In 1897 Harvie partnered with Thwaites to become one of the first Melburnians to work with moving film, specialised in the speedy reporting of sporting events such as horse racing and football. In 1897, Thwaites and Harvie photographed and filmed the Caulfield Cup horse races, successfully screening their footage on the same night as the race, reportedly only ?six hours after the finish of the race? (Melbourne Punch, 21 October 1897, p.332c). This was thought to be quite a feat at the time and said to have 'established a record in the colonies' (The Argus, 18 Oct 1897, p3h). Thwaites and Harvie similarly filmed the 1897 Victoria Racing Club Derby and the 1897 Melbourne Cup, screening the footage the same night it was filmed. This flick book is another record of the 1897 Melbourne Cup produced by Harvie and Thwaites.

Robert William Harvie was a professional photographer who, with his business partner Albert Sutcliffe, owned a photography studio named Harvie & Sutcliffe between 1898 and 1908, located in the Cromwell Buildings, 366a Bourke Street, corner of Bourke and Elizabeth Streets, Melbourne.

The Harvie Collection includes examples of Robert Harvie's private and professional photographic practice. A number of the photographs depict the family life of four generations of the Harvie family, including the Lang family.

The Harvie and Lang families had social significance in Melbourne through their active involvement in early Australian vegetarian movements, early moving film, photography and architecture, as well as various other cultural societies and clubs in Melbourne.
